What are Pauper and Peasant Commander?Pauper Commander is an unofficial Magic: The Gathering format that combines the rules of the Pauper (only commons allowed) and Commander (100 card singleton with a deck-defining commander). Peasant Commander is similar, but also allows some uncommon cards.
What makes Pauper Commander different?
If you already play Commander (also known as EDH or Elder Dragon Highlander) or Pauper, you already know most of the rules. Here's a quick rundown of the differences:
The rest is the same as normal Commander! (Some playgroups lower starting life totals to 30-35 and commander damage to 15-18.) |

Why play Pauper Commander?
- Decks are very cheap to build. If you draft or buy Magic sets, you should already have plenty of cards to play.
- Allowing non-legendary common and uncommon creatures as commanders opens up new deck building possibilities.
- It gives you an excuse to play cards you like that never make the cut when up against more powerful rares.
- Restricting decks to 99% commons eliminates many "unfun" tactics like mass land destruction, most infinite combos, infinite turns, and overpowered "good stuff" decks (sorry if those are your kind of fun).
- Flametongue Kavu can be your commander!
